So i have a 3 year old chocolate lab that my breeder wanted to use for the first time as a stud. I dropped him off at his property Sunday and they tried putting him in with her on Monday and Tuesday and from my understanding he sniffed her but was so distracted that he didnt mount her. All he does at home is smells the rear end of my female lab who is fixed. When I picked him up there was 8 other dogs in kennels all barking like crazy so I don't doubt he got distracted. My trainer also said that he was constantly looking at the door of the kennel "looking for me to pick him up" is how he put it. He is pretty attached to me so I don't doubt he could have been wondering when I am picking him up instead of doing the deed like he was supposed to. Either way that now leaves me with a stud that wont mount and a breeder that wont invite me back for those purposes who suggested I should just have him fixed. Is there anything I can do? I really wanted to get puppies out of him with my stud fee being a puppy since I wanted to donate them to a veterans non profit and get a few months of puppy cuddles at the same time before I make the donation.

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear you've had a disappointing experience. This isn't my area of expertise, so I've checked with Pippa. She says that standard practice is actually to bring the female dog to your male dog - and that it's pretty reasonable of your dog not to feel like performing in strange surroundings! So coming to you instead might be something you'd like to discuss with the breeder you're working with.

And she suggests you might find this article helpful :)

And that is why the female is brought to the male, and not vice versa. You can try again by the breeder dropping their female to you next time.
